Changes

Filed under: news, ramblings — Cara @ 8:35 am

Hello friends,

Those who pop in regularly have probably noticed that the site doesn’t get updated very often anymore. The truth is Happy Yellow House is a one woman show. Just me with a little technical/design help from my husband when needed. Otherwise it’s just me and just me is tired.

It’s a combination of things really. First of all, I’m currently going through some major life changes. Please don’t worry, my health is okay. Some health issues are actually under fairly decent control right now. Others not so much but I’m coping. The marriage is good, no worries there. *knock wood* The bills are paid, there’s food on the table and a roof over our heads for which I’m truly thankful in this economy. It’s some other stuff that I need time to adjust to and reroute my daily life. It’ll be fine. It’ll just take time.

Secondly, I have pretty much the crochet design equivalent of writer’s block. This has been going on for months, unfortunately. Nothing much new has popped into my little pointed head, and yet the few ideas that have popped in, I can’t get to work out. I’m burnt out. I need a break. I’ve been doing this for almost 15 years now and I’ve loved it but I’m in a definite slump.

So I’m basically “archiving” the site by putting the patterns category page as the home page for now. I’m sure it won’t stay like that. The dry spell will be over eventually. I’ll have more energy eventually. The design ideas will start pouring back in eventually.

I just ask that you bear with me. The only reason I’m even posting this because I think folks have a right to know what’s going on.

Thank you for understanding.

Cara

Okay, not quite alive yet

Filed under: news, ramblings — Cara @ 10:47 am

Well, I thought I had my act together before but obviously I didn’t. But today is a better day and I’m feeling much better now.

I finally have posted October’s scarf. I’m terribly sorry about the horrid photo but it’s rainy and dreary and it has been for weeks now. I’ll try to get a better photo later.

Today I will be starting November’s scarf. Fingers crossed that it’ll get posted sometime before the end of November lol :)

Back From the Dead…Hopefully

Filed under: news, ramblings — Cara @ 9:11 am

Oh dear. What a couple of weeks this has been. I must apologize to y’all about the lack of site updates. I got pneumonia a couple of weeks ago. This meant I had to stop taking my medication for my rheumatoid arthritis. The meds make an infection worse. A simple infection can turn deadly (rarely) with the meds. I’ve been in agonizing pain for a week or so now.

But the infection seems cleared up and I’m back on my RA med. It’ll take a few weeks for it to build back up in my body, unfortunately. So, please be patient with me. I can at least move without wanting to scream out in pain but I’m still on the slow side right now.

I think my first priority of the day is to post the October scarf. I’ve had it finished for about 11 days now. It’s been raining here non-stop for almost two weeks so I can’t photograph outside. This means digging out the old photo lamps lol. Hopefully today I can find the strength to set everything up and get the photo and pattern up.

Thanks so much for your patience :D

Happy Birthday To Me!!!

Filed under: news, ramblings — Cara @ 2:31 pm

Yes, it’s my birthday and I am going to blow my own horn ;) I love birthdays. All birthdays. They don’t even have to be mine! I got some great pressies. A brand new spiffy laptop from dear husband, dishes from one of my sisters and a gift card from the other. Gorgeous Australian yarn from a dear friend and lots of cards! I’m having a very good day!

I’ve begun the preparation for my birthday feast. Yes, I make my own feast. No one else like celebrations but I adore them so I make my own. There will be chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, blackeyed peas, gravy and biscuits! A true Southern meal. I always have the same thing even if we actually go out to eat lol. When I was a kid it was fried chicken instead of the steak but that’s too messy. Like chicken fried steak isn’t?

And to top all that off we have yummy brownies! Was gonna make cake but I didn’t have the right kind of icing nor the ingredients to make some. I can’t drive so brownies it is! Brownies and cake all serve the same purpose anyway…to add inches to my hips ;)

Also, a great big happy birthday hug to my friend’s daughter, Kaila!! And a big hug for anyone else celebrating a birthday today!

New Patterns!

Filed under: news — Cara @ 1:45 pm

Finally! After all the grief with internet hosts we finally have two new patterns up for your stitching pleasure!

First up is the Hailey Crochet Baby Blanket named after the little cutie pie in the previous post :D

Next, just in time for holiday stitching, an absolutely adorable Toy Solider doll! I am quite proud of him. He came out even better than I had hoped! He goes very well with our Santa, Mrs Claus and Snowman dolls, too.

Right now I’m stitching up an adorable Gingerbread Boy quilt ghan designed by the very talented Cherri Lacey! Stay tuned and enjoy the new patterns!

Brand New Updates!

Filed under: news, ramblings — Cara @ 7:39 pm

Well, my last post was griping about our internet host (I was told I erroneously referred to them as our ISP lol) causing much havoc. That’s been solved! Yay! How did we solve it? We switched companies after getting the run around for several days, that’s how. I don’t have much power in this life but I do have the power of where I spend my money. Remember, kiddies, taking your money somewhere else speaks louder than any complaint.

So for the last few days my wonderful hubby, Big Daddy, has been working very hard on the site. He’s really a great computer geek :) He has worked it to where the blog now is part of the actual website! Now everything looks nice and integrated.

And bestest of all he has the Gallery working again! I’m so happy I could cry lol :)

Now I know that most of you would be even happier with new patterns. Never fear, my dears. They’re on their way! I have two different new patterns that need transcribing from my chicken scratch notes into something normal folks will understand.

And our family’s best new project of all? Our beautiful new baby niece, Hailey! Everyone is so thrilled we can barely contain ourselves! It’s been 24 years since this family had a new girl. Lots of boys but no girls. And of course as a girlie craft fiend I just *lurve* making frilly pink stuff! :D

Of course, as a proud new auntie I absolutely must show her off. Check out that precious little face! We haven’t gotten to meet her yet. It’ll be the holidays before we can and I can hardly wait!

Shame on Me

Filed under: news, ramblings — Cara @ 10:52 am

Oh dear I haven’t blogged in ages. Must be better about that!

You may have noticed that things haven’t changed at all on the site for weeks. For that, I apologize. Our ISP was bought out by another company that changed the software. Why they did this I do not know. Obviously, they’ve never heard the phrase “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” lol :)

But they’ve located the problem and are working on it today. Hooray! We have a minimum of two new patterns to share. A beautiful stylized Log Cabin quilt and the cutest toy soldier! I’m very excited to share these with you!

Oh dear! Where has the time gone!

Filed under: ramblings — Cara @ 2:57 pm

My goodness I haven’t said a word since August!! I’m terribly sorry about that. One of my resolutions this year is to be better about updating the blog and the web site. I really dropped the ball last year. I had some pretty rough patches healthwise. Not an excuse, just an observation. Anyhoo….on to other things!

I’ve been super busy since about mid-October preparing entries for Lion Brand’s Vanna’s Choice contest. I’m entering a couple of my patterns that are already on the site and one completely new one. No peeks though. Don’t want to jinx anything. But, if I do say so myself, I really out did myself on that one.

We’ve also had quite the mother lode of wonderfully talented and generous ladies submitting their very own quilt patterns for us to share with everyone. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am about that!!

We’ve also added a couple of features to the site. First, a Crochet Tip of the Week. In the right hand sidebar we’ll add a new handy tip every Monday (if I don’t forget lol).

Next up is the 12 Scarves of 2009. I really enjoy this one. This was inspired by a Crochet Along on Crochetville started by the ever popular and extremely talented Darski. The idea is to make one scarf a month for each month in 2009. How fun is that?!? So, I decided to challenge myself to design a new scarf every month and add it as a new feature! All of this is with Darski’s blessing. Thanks, doll! Check it out in the right sidebar.

Last, Book and Product reviews. Every couple of weeks we’ll review a crochet related book or product. They’re linked to Amazon.com so that you don’t even have to go looking for them. This is as close to advertising as we plan to get. We don’t want a bunch of advertising cluttering up the site. The site is for fun and not really for profit :)

That’s it for now! I promise I’ll add more soon!

The Mother of All Rug Yarn Projects

Filed under: ramblings, work in progress — Cara @ 4:20 pm

I have been slowly collecting rug yarn for a while now to make a massive (8′ x 10′) rug for my dining room. Well, I put out a call on Crochetville to all my buddies that I was in the market to buy. I got a huge bundle from my dear friend Krystal to start me off right! Plus, I’ve bought some and been gifted a bit more and was finally able to start this monster project last night!

Here’s some photos….

Here’s the bundle that Krystal send me :D

Here’s what it turned into all spilled out…

Here’s everything I’ve collected so far (K’s takes up about 3/4 of this big bag!)…

And here’s the start of the rug…7 1/2 feet wide (folded in half for the photo) and 10 rows of single crochet along…

I’m just using colors at random along with one strand of black worsted weight yarn as a unifier. I think it’s gonna come out really great :D

HYH Server Outage

Filed under: news — Cara @ 7:17 pm

Grrr! I hate to have to report that our ISP is having systemwide outages since last night. We apologize for the inconvenience. They are working on it as fast as they can. Thank you for being patient :)
