SCARECROW DOLL

(Much thanks to eagle eyed crochet fan, Cindi from TN, for catching errors in this pattern!  Folks like her help keep me straight!)

Single Crochet Decrease - Insert hook into next st, YO, draw up a loop, YO, insert hook into next st, draw up a loop, YO, draw through remaining loops on hook

Double Crochet Decrease - YO, insert hook into next stitch, YO, draw up a loop, YO, draw hook through two of the loops on hook, YO, insert hook into next stitch, YO, draw up a loop, YO, draw hook through two of the loops on hook, YO, draw through remaining loops on hook

Markers - Markers are used to specify where a round begins and ends.  Use a small piece of contrasting yarn or a small safety pin placed in the stitch before the first stitch of each round.  Move the marker as you go.

BODY

Approximate finished size - 21" tall

Warning: Choking hazard due to small parts.  If you are making this item for a child under the age of 3 years please embroider facial features. 

Rnd 1) With Orange, ch 60, join with a sl st to first ch to form a ring being careful not to twist chain. Sc in each chain around (60 sc)

Rnd 2-29) Sc in each sc around (60 sc)

Rnd 30) *sc in next sc, dec; repeat from * around (40 sc)

Rnd 31) *sc in next 2 sc, dec; repeat from * around (30 sc)

 NECK

 Rnd 32) *sc in next sc, dec; repeat from * around (20 sc)

Rnd 33) sc in each sc around to last sc, change to Buff yarn (20 sc)

 HEAD

 Rnd 34) *sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around (30 sc)

Rnd 35) *sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around (40 sc)

Rnd 1) Lay body/head section on its back with the eyes centered.  Trace an imaginary line starting between the two eyes going down to the free loops of the foundation ch of Rnd 1 of Body.  This is where you will begin the first leg.  Place a marker in this free loop.  Stuff the head and body. With a sl st join Buff yarn to the marked center free loop.  Sc in same free loop as sl st.  Sc in next 29 free loops; join with a sl st to first sc of leg. DO NOT TURN (30 sc)

Rnd 2-19) Sc in each sc around (30 sc)

Rnd 20) Sc in each sc around to last; make color change to Black (30 sc)

Foot:

Rnd 21) Dec around (15 sc)

Rnd 22) Sc in each sc around (15 sc)

Rnd 23) 2 sc in each sc around (30 sc)

Rnd 24-30) Sc in each sc around; stuff (30 sc)

Rnd 31) *Sc in next sc, dec; repeat from * around (20 sc)

Rnd 32) Dec around; stuff a little more (10 sc)

Rnd 33) Dec around; finish off leaving a length for sewing; sew opening closed; flatten bottom of foot (5 sc)

 Leg 2

Rnd 1) Working in remain 30 free loops of Rnd 1 of Body join Buff yarn with a sl st.  Sc in same loop as sl st.  Sc in remaining 29 free loops; join with a sl st to first sc of leg.  DO NOT TURN (30 sc)

 Base: Rnd 1) With Cornmeal, ch 2, work 6 sc in second ch from hook, join to first sc with a sl st, DO NOT TURN (6 sc)

Rnd 2) 2 sc in next sc and in each sc around (12 sc)

Rnd 3) 2 sc in each sc around (24 sc)

Rnd 4) *sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around (36 sc)

Rnd 5-6) Sc in each sc around; finish off after Rnd 6 (36 sc)

Fringe (hair): Cut a piece of cardboard 4” x 12”.  Wrap Cornmeal yarn around 72 times.  Cut yarn along long edge of cardboard to make 72 8” lengths of Cornmeal yarn.  Using a crochet hook, draw the folded end up through the stitches around the base and pull the loose ends through the folded end; draw the knot up tightly.  Do this twice in each of the 36 stitches around the base. 

 HAT

Rnd 1) With Burgundy, ch 2, 6 sc in second ch from hook, join to first with sl st, DO NOT TURN

Shoulder Strap 1:

Assembly:

Lay overall flat.  Fold left edge to line up with center of bib section.  Do the same with the right edge to form legs.  Using Country Blue yarn and tapestry needle start at lower edge of one cuff sew up the inside of first leg, down inside edge of next leg to opposite edge of cuff.  Sew back seam closed.  Sew shoulder straps to top of back.

Patches:

Row 1) With any color you wish, ch 11, sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1 turn (10 sc)

Rows 2-8) Sc in each sc across, ch 1 turn; finish off after Row 8 (10 sc) Using contrasting color of yarn sew to overall.  Use your creativity and make as many (or as few) patches as you like and sew them to the overalls!

 

FINISHING

 Stitch wig and hat to head.  Using photograph as a reference embroider nose using black yarn and mouth with burgundy yarn.  Dress Scarecrow and enjoy!
