SHELL PATTERN CROCHET PURSE
Thanks so much to Carol for making the corrections to this
pattern! We’ll get ‘em right yet, y’all =)
ABBREVIATIONS Beg - Beginning
ch - chain
sc - Single Crochet
dc - Double Crochet
sp - Space
sl st - Slip Stitch
BLO - Back Loop Only
SHELL STITCH
CROCHET HANDBAG
Materials Needed
6 oz Your choice of color worsted
weight yarn
Coordinating lightweight cotton or satin
fabric for lining
Tapestry Needle
Sewing needle and coordinating thread or
sewing machine
Size “G” crochet hook, or size needed
for proper gauge
NOTE: Ch 3 counts as one dc throughout
BODY
Ch 37
Row 1: (Right side) Dc in third ch from hook and in each ch
across, 3 ch, turn (34 dc)
Rows 2-31: Dc in each dc across, ch 3, turn
Row 32: Dc in each dc across, ch 5, turn
FLAP
Row 33: Skip next 4 dc, in next dc work (3 dc,
ch 2, 3 dc): shell made; *skip next 5 dc, in next dc work (3 dc, ch 2, 3
dc): shell made; rep from * across to last 5 dc; dc in last dc, ch 3
turn.
Rows 34-43: Shell in ch-2 sp of each shell across to
turning ch; dc in 3rd ch of turning ch-3; ch 3, turn.
Row 44: Shell in ch-2 sp of each shell across to
turning ch; dc in 3rd ch of turning ch-3; ch 1; working along
long side of handbag and sl st evenly along edge of flap and body
working sc in corner to turn; sl st in free loops of first row of dc, sc
in corner to turn; sl st evenly along edge of remaining body and flap;
finish off; weave in loose ends.
LINING
Cut coordinating
piece of fabric to fit rows 1-32 of body leaving ¼” on all four sides.
Turn under ¼” on each side; press. Use sewing machine or hand sew with
needle and coordinating thread, sew lining neatly to wrong side of
handbag body.
STRAP:
Ch 45
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook;
sc in each remaining ch across, ch 1 turn
Row 2: Sc in each sc across; finish off;
weave in ends.
ASSEMBLY:
Fold body in
half holding right sides together to form body of handbag. Using
coordinating yarn and tapestry needle stitch sides closed. Attach strap
by sewing one end to each body side seam. Turn right side out and
enjoy!
