Grecian Tiles Afghan

“Grecian Tiles ”
Crochet Afghan
Approximately 54" x 62 "

Over at Crochetville they had an event called The Crochet Games of Ancient Greece that coinsided with the 2008 Summer Olympics (they couldn't use the "O" word because of legal issues :op). I was a competitor in the Games and this is the afghan I designed for it! I hope you enjoy it!

 

Abbreviations:

Ch - Chain
sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet
hdc - half double crochet
trc - treble crochet
FO - Finish off
sk - skip
sl st - slip stitch
beg - beginning
sp - space

Materials:

3 skeins Lion Brand's Pound of Love yarn in White
Size H crochet hook
 

The Square - make 80 (approximately 6 1/2" each)

Ch 4, join to first to form a ring

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 2 (3dc, ch 2 in ring) three times, sl st to top of beg ch 3 to join

Rnd 2: Ch1, sc in same st as joining, ch 4, skip next dc, sc in next dc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch 2 sp, *sc in next dc, ch 4, sk next dc, sc in next dc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch 2 sp; repeat from * three times, join to first sc

Rnd 3: Sl st in ch 4 sp, *3 sc in ch 4 sp, ch 1, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in corner ch 3, ch 1; repeat from * three times more, join to first sc

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in each sc, dc and ch 1 sp around working (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch 3 sps, join to first sc (44 sc, 4 ch 2 sps)

Rnd 5: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in each sc around, working (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each (60 dc, 4 ch 2 sps)

Rnd 6: Ch 4 (counts as first hdc), skip next st, *(hdc in next st, ch 2, skip next st) across to last dc before corner ch 2 sp, hdc in that stitch (ch 2, dc, ch 2) in corner ch 2 sp, hdc in next stitch, ch 2, skip next st; repeat from * around, join to second ch of beg ch 4 to join (32 hdc, 4 dc, 8 ch 2 sps)

Rnd 7: (Note: work just one sc in the ch 2 sps) Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in each hdc and ch 2 sp around except at corner dc work (ch 2, sc in dc, ch 2), join to first hdc, finish off, weave in loose ends. (72 sc, 8 ch 2 sps)

Assembly:

Assemble squares by holding right sides together and working through BLO whip stitch together in a grid of 8 squares wide by 10 square long.

Border:

Rnd 1: Working along all four edges of afghan body, evenly hdc around working (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in the corners, join with to first with sl st.

Rnd 2: Mesh Row: Ch 5 skip first st, trc in next st, ch 2, #*skip next st, trc in next st, ch 2 repeat from * to corner making certain that your last trc before the corner is in the st right before the corner ch 2 (fudge if you have to). In corner ch 2 sp, work (ch 2, trc, ch 2), repeat from # around, join to first with sl st.

Rnd 3: Ch 2, hdc in each trc and ch 2 sp around except at corner trc work (ch 2, dc in corner trc, ch 2), join to first with sl st.

Rnd 4: Ch 2, hc in each hdc around except at corners work (2 hdc in ch 2 sp right before the corner dc, ch 2, dc in corner dc, ch 2, 2 hdc in ch 2 sp right after the corner dc), join to first with sl st.

Rnd 5: Reverse sc evenly around, join to first with sl st, finish off, weave in loose ends.
